Vain 25 vuotta tätä sai odottaa, nimittäin ensimmäisen fanituskohteeni näkemistä livenä.

1990-luvun alussa, jälkeen lastenlauluvaiheen ja ennen ysäriteknobuumia, löysin vanhempieni C-kasettikätköt ja Queenin The Miraclen. Breakthru oli sittemmin vakiohitti naapuriporukkamme autotallidiskoissa, joissa esiteltiin parhaita muuveja hiekkapölyn lennellessä ympärillä. En edes muista, ehdinkö elää samaan aikaan Freddie Mercuryn kanssa tietäen hänestä ja hänen lahjakkuudestaan laulajana, vai hoksasinko asian vasta kuoleman jälkeen. Veikkaan jälkimmäistä.

Siitä toki voidaan olla montaa mieltä, onko nykypäivän Queeniksi itseään kutsuva bändi enää Queen – alkuperäiskokoonpanosta kun mukana ovat vain Brian May ja Roger Taylor. Varsinkin solistin valinta on aiheuttanut närää, onhan kyseessä eräskin American Idolissa kakkossijalle yltänyt (ja itseasiassa nimenomaan Queenin biisillä koelauluista kisaan päässyt!) teinityttöjen unelma. Mutta mitä sitten? Haittaako se, jos solisti tuo myös Queenille uusia faneja? Haittaako se etenkään silloin, kun solisti on niinkin käsittämättömän taitava laulaja kuin Adam Lambert? Keväällä Helsingissäkin vieraillut artisti antoi Hartwallilla encoressaan Another One Bites The Dustin muodossa maistiaisen siitä, mitä tänään Kaisaniemessä on luvassa. En malta odottaa keikan ensisävelien sinkoamista taivaalle, mutta omat odotukseni täyttyvät silti vasta, kun ikisuosikki Bohemian Rhapsody kajahtaa ilmoille. Ah.

It took only 25 years for me to see the target of my first fandom ever live. In the early 1990’s right between children’s sing-along tunes and techno craze I found my parents’ cassette stash and The Miracle by Queen. After that discovery Breakthru was one of the most played tracks at the garage discos we, the children of our neighbourhood, arranged almost every week, showing off our best dance moves amidst the sand dust. I can’t even remember whether I acknowledged Freddie Mercury when he was still alive or just afterwards. Probably the latter.

One thing we can only agree that we can’t agree on is, whether today’s Queen still is Queen with only two of the original members touring (Brian May and Roger Taylor, that is, although it was exactly those two who found the band in the first place). Especially having an American Idol second place artist (although he got through the first auditions in the contest with a Queen song!!), a teenage dream, has been dividing fans. But what does it matter if the vocalist brings new, young fans to Queen concerts? What does it matter overall, especially when the vocalist happens to be as profoundly talented as Adam Lambert is? When the artist visited Helsinki in April he ended the encore with Another One Bites The Dust, thus giving a small example of what’s to be expected tonight at Kaisaniemi park. I can’t wait for the first notes of the gig to be shot through the air, but let’s face it, the one song I’m waiting for the most is – without a doubt – the one above. Bliss.
