Flow’n toinen päivä valkeni aurinkoisena ja leppoisana. Hitaan keskipäivän jälkeen sinkosin Suvilahteen, jossa Lake Jons jo fiilisteli päälavalla. En ollut edes yrittänyt tähdätä keikan alkuun, sillä kolmikon pariin kertaan pienessä paikassa nähneenä epäilin, miten he pystyvät ottamaan suuren päälavan haltuun keskellä kirkasta päivää. Musiikista kyllä pidän, ei siinä mitään. Ja näemmä epäilyksenikin osoittautuivat vääriksi – main stagen haltuun ottamisessa ei ollut mitään ongelmaa! Bändi oli kasvattanut kokoonpanoaan lavalle jousisoittimien avulla, mikä tietenkin antoi oman panoksensa lopputulokseen. Kappaleet soivat mahtipontisina, mutta helposti lähestyttävinä. Positiivinen yllätys siis.

Positiivinen yllätys oli myös päivän varsinainen ensimmäinen keikkani, D.R.E.A.M.G.I.R.L.S. Kollektiivi koostui kahdesta DJ’stä, Taika Mannilasta ja Lina Schifferistä, sekä useasta räppäristä: stagella nähtiin Adikia, AK, F, Sofa ja Yeboyah. Kuten nimikin kertoo, kaikki olivat naisia/naisoletettuja. Osa oli minulle tuttuja artisteja, osa tuttuja vain nimeltä, ei musiikilta, ja osa taas itselle enimmäkseen täysin uusia naamoja. Näistä hykertelevimmin mieleen jäi F, joka yhdisti riimeihin taidokasta laulua. Vaikka jokaisella oli aikaa vetää vain pari biisiä, keikka oli viihdyttävä ja toimi nimenomaan oivana showcasena näille nouseville hip hop -artisteille. Lisäpisteitä näyttävistä visuista sekä jokaiselle erikseen tuunatuista, uniikeista Addun asuista.

Vestaa kuuntelin tällä kertaa vain kaukaa, sillä olen nähnyt mimmin jo useasti tänä kesänä (keikasta itsestään kuulin ristiriitaisia lausuntoja – toisten mielestä mahtava, toisten mielestä ei toiminut). Anna Puuta kävin lähinnä kuvaamassa, sillä kesän ainoa keikka The Intergalactic Love Odyssey -spessuavaruusmeininkeineen kiinnosti. Koska naisen tuotanto ei varsinaisesti ole lähellä sydäntä, en lopulta jaksanut jäädä kuuntelemaan pitkäksi aikaa, vaan suuntasin muihin rientoihin. Nainen näytti kuitenkin selvästi nauttivan lavalla olosta, eivätkä Ziggy Stardust -vibat olleet yhtään pahat. Eli Nonamen viime säveliä kuuntelemaan, jotka nekään eivät lopulta ihan täysin istuneet omaan pirtaan. Kohta olikin jo indiepoppoo Grizzly Bearin vuoro valloittaa päälava. Hartaasti musiikkiin keskittyvä bändi ei ehkä hurmannut laajaa joukkoa, mutta ne, jotka keikkaa kuuntelivat, hurmaantuivat muidenkin edestä. Koska räppikeikat kiinnostaa jostain syystä aina Flow’ssa, kävin fiilistelemässä hetken myös 6lackia, joka veti teltan tungokseen asti täyteen.

Sheffieldistä maailmanvalloitusretkelleen lähtenyt Arctic Monkeys oli varmasti usealla koko Flow’n kohokohta. Kun Alex Turner astui lavalle, heräsi koko Suvilahti eloon. Karismaa vastaan on vaikea taistella. Itseäni kuitenkin ehkä hämmästytti se, miten paljon bändi on yhtä kuin Alex Turner – eikä niinkään useasta jäsenestä koostuva tasa-arvoinen yhtye. En myöskään ole kunnolla kuunnellut Monkeysia sitten debyyttilevyn, jota kyllä siihen aikaan luukutin ihan huolella. I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor kirvoitti silti parhaat pogoamiset sekä minussa että muussa ihmismeressä. Hyvä keikka, josta fanit taatusti saivat kaiken irti. Itse nautin tunnelmasta, vaikka osa biiseistä olikin vieraita.

Illan viimeisenä teltassa sykähdytti elektropop-neito Charlotte Gainsbourg. Punaisen teltan keikka oli jollain tapaa transsimainen, vaikkei missään mielessä kova, vaan pikemminkin herkkä ja hellä. Oikeastaan kukaan muu ei olisi tällaista settiä voinutkaan vetää, ainoastaan tämä nimenomainen laulajatar ja näyttelijätär, jolla riittää lahjakkuutta kokonaiselle ranskalaiselle kylälle. Ehkä jokin toinen aika ja paikka olisi tuottanut vielä hienomman kokemuksen, mutta varsin miellyttävä se oli tämäkin. Lähdin juuri ja juuri ennen keikan loppua, skippasin kutsun loppuillan bileisiin ja hakeuduin majapaikkaan lämpimän peiton alle. Vielä yksi päivä jäljellä.

The second day of Flow Festival awakened with a sunshine and without anxiety. After a slow noon I dashed into Suvilahti just in time to see Lake Jons warming people up at main stage. The threesome weren’t my main first goal of the day, mostly due to the fact that I’ve seen them a couple of times before at small venues and I was doubtful whether they’d manage to gain enough attention at a huge stage in the middle of the day. Oh how wrong I was! Sure, they’d grown the band for this performance a bit (strings mainly, nothing can go wrong with strings), but probably even without any extras they could’ve handled it well. The songs were as warm and approachable as ever, but also just pompous enough for this venue.

Another positive surprise was the D.R.E.A.M.G.I.R.L.S collective I definitely wanted to see. The performance consisted of two Finnish DJs, a few Finnish rappers such as Adikia, AK, F, Sofa and Yeboyah, and visuals as well as customized Adidas wear for all, just for this event. And yes, all these talented musicians were women. As you might know, rap isn’t my most preferred genre, but I’ve seen so many good female rappers on stage I definitely didn’t want to miss this. Some of the gals I knew by name, some by their music and some of them not at all. Sofa was as energetic as at Qstock, but the one who stole a piece of me was F, who besides rhymed also sang beautifully. Everyone only had time for a couple of songs, but the gig still worked out as a whole and indeed as a showcase for these uprising women.

I listened to Vesta only from far, ’cause I’ve seen here already thrice this summer (some contradictory comments were said about this gig – some loved, some didn’t like at all). Anna Puu is becoming one of Finland’s wanted pop stars and I wanted to see her The Intergalactic Love Odyssey gig, the only gig she had this summer. I’m not really into her music though, so mainly I just took photos, felt warm about the Ziggy Stardust vibes, listened a bit and went to see Noname. Unfortunately I couldn’t really get a hold of her performance either, for reasons unknown. Soon it was time for Grizzly Bear to climb up on main stage. The indie icons played tunes earnestly, seriously and gracefully. The set was not for everyone, but the ones enjoying it, seemed ecstatic. ’Cause somehow rap gigs always seem interesting at Flow Festival, I went to pick up the vibes 6lack threw from the stage to the audience. Obviously the set was liked by many, since the tent was packed.

Now, there’s a rock group from Sheffield, UK, who began their overtaking of the World some years ago and who probably were the highlight of the weekend for several Flow goers. I listened to Arctic Monkeys’ debut a lot, but then lost interest. To me it still has always been a somewhat interesting band, emphasis on band, so thus it was a surprise to me that the group was actually 99% Alex Turner, 1% the rest of the lads. Not that there’s really anything wrong with that – when you have such charisma as Turner, you’re kind of bound to take over the stage and tower over your bandmates. When he stepped into the spotlight, the crowd melted. The gig was good and hectic, even though I didn’t really know majority of the songs. I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor surely got me dancing too.

Last of the evening for me was electrolady Charlotte Gainsbourg. Her gig in the red tent was somewhat trancelike, with a tenderness only a French musician slash actress like her could deliver. Maybe another place and time for the gig would’ve been even better, but this one was  delightful as well. I left just a bit before she ended, skipped an invitation for some serious partying and got myself under a warm blanket at the place I was staying at. One more day left.
